On Sep. 2, 2010, Hanks played Riverside at Hanks High School and lost by seven points, 14-7.
On the starting kickoff, sophomore Darius Brown received the ball. During the first quarter, sophomore Joe Johnson rolled out to the left and looked for an open receiver. He then took off and ran for a gain of five yards.
In the second quarter Riverside scored its first touchdown. As Riverside began its next drive, sophomore Mario Hernandez intercepted the ball and returned it to the 40-yard line.
The score remains 6-0.
Going into the third quarter, Hanks stopped Riverside from scoring and forced a punt. In the last quarter, Hanks scored a touchdown and made a point-after touchdown (PAT). Riverside then scored once again and made a two-point conversion.
Johnson passed to Brown at the 50-yard line with 44 seconds to go to try and make a comeback. Unfortunately, Riverside sacks Johnson while the clock is running down to finish any hopes of the Knights trying the game.
“I did alright, it was more like a team effort,” said Johnson. “Overall, we did a good job. This game was a fluke, but I think in the long run, we’ll have a successful season.”
Hernandez, who had a good game on defense, doesn’t believe the score was any indication on how the team played.
“I am not disappointed because we all worked out the team when we were down at the half,” said Hernandez.
