The man who blackmailed David Letterman last fall, has been released from jail.

Robert “Joe” Halderman, 52, was released Thursday after serving four months of a six month sentence at Rikers Island for trying to blackmail Letterman for $2 million.

“He survived this and he’s glad to be getting off the island,” said his lawyer, Gerald Shargel.

Halderman still has to complete 1,000 hours of community services and will most likely be working among homeless and recently released prisoners.

The former CBS “48 Hours” producer pleaded guilty earlier this year to attempted grand larceny.

Halderman threatened Letterman’s world  would “collapse around him” and reveal his dalliances with female staffers if he didn’t pay the hush money. Rather than pay, the “Late Show” host went to the authorities.

Halderman’s threat prompted Letterman to reveal on-air that he’d had sex with women who worked for him. One of them turned out to be an ex-girlfriend of Halderman.

While he no longer works for CBS, Halderman was up for an Emmy earlier this month for an April 2009 story about an American exchange student charged with murder in Italy.

Letterman married girlfriend Regina Lasko last year and they have a 6-year-old son. He emerged chastened but unharmed by the scandal.
