The advantages, and disadvantages, of home schooling

Home schooling is having an education in one’s home, usually by parents or tutors. Many teens like the idea of home schooling.

“I don’t have to deal with all the drama anymore,” said sophomore Celeste Acuna, who attended Hanks last year. “Don’t get me wrong, I miss all the memories, but now I have time to do things for myself.”

Acuna feels that being home schooled will help her in her future. Instead of worrying about Friday and Saturday nights, she puts effort into her work, doesn’t have to rely on the class pace, and doesn’t have to worry about peer pressure.

Being home schooled has opened many opportunities for Acuna. As part of an organization who deals directly with home-schooled children, she has been invited to go over seas with a medical team in Africa.

If she continued enrolling in public schools, she would have not been introduced to this big opportunity.  Acuna appreciates the time she has being home schooled.

While some students enjoy being home schooled, some students enjoy the noise of a crowded hallway.

“In home school, I didn’t have as many friends as I do now,” said sophomore Caroline Cordova. “It was harder to concentrate at home because I was always getting distracted.”

Although Cordova now has more communication, she still remains on task at school and gets her work done. At home, she had many things to do, similar to Acuna, but Cordova could not settle down and do her work.

“I didn’t have a lot of self discipline, which is what you really need if you’re going to be home schooled,” said Cordova.

She failed math during her time at home. Now being enrolled in public school, she has made improvements and is now passing the subject in which she once had trouble.
