The varsity football team hoped to pull in their third district win as they faced the Montwood Rams on Thursday, Oct. 27,  at the Student Activities Complex.

Even though the Knights put up 35 points, the Rams offense was hitting on ally cylinders as they defeated Hanks 52-35.   The team (2-5 in district 1-5A) finishes the season against long-time rival Eastwood (2-5).  Game time is 7 p.m. at Excalibur Stadium.

From the start, the Knights definitely put up a good game as the energy from both sides of the stadium pumped up the teams.

In the first quarter, both teams went head to head as the score kept going back and forth. As soon as the Rams made it to the end zone, the Knights fired and did the same. Senior Adonis Powell scored the first touchdown of the night.

“It was a sprint draw,” Powell said.  ”It was open at first for about five yards.  The safety and the corner crashed hard.  I lowered my shoulder and I just had to beat them to the end zone.

Powell finished the game with 132 yards on 20 carries and three touchdowns.  He also caught three passes for 27 yards and one touchdown.

Powell’s three first-half touchdowns kept the game close as the Rams held a 31-21 lead going into halftime.

He began the third quarter with a rush into the end zone making the score 31-27. Both teams would add on to scoreboard for the remainder of the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Knights had the chance to beat Montwood on their homecoming night but unfortunately lost their momentum. Even though both teams were obviously worn out, the Rams came back in the last seven minutes. Montwood’s Alexis Ortiz took a eight yard rush toward the end zone making the final score Hanks 35, Montwood 52.
