On Tuesday, Nov 8, the Lady Knights basketball team lost their first game of the season against The Chapin Huskies, 59-31.
The girls’ will participate in the Chapin Tournament starting Thursday, Nov. 10 and concluding on Saturday, Nov. 12.
The team was excited for their first home game of the season. Although it wasn’t their first district game they still wanted to play hard and pull out a win.
“I’m really excited,” said senior Crystal Cuevas. ”It’s my senior year I want my last year in basketball to be great. I hope we have a better season then we did last year.”
Before the game began the Lady Knights knew it was going to be a tough game because of the Huskies star player Kristina Higgins. Higgins will be playing on The Baylor Basketball Team next year in college.
“She was tall,” said Junior Tory Castellnos. ”I’m a tall person myself, but having to stand next to her and guard her made me feel like I was short. Overall, she is a really good player and I wish her luck next year.”
The Lady Huskies put pressure on The Lady Knights the entire game by playing man-to-man defense. A few times the team had a five-second violation called against them because they couldn’t get the ball in on time.
The fans could tell this type of defense was bugging the girls because they expressed their frustration on the court. By halftime, the girls couldnt take it anymore; they knew they had to figure something out t0 come back from a 35-15 deficit.
By the second half of the game, the Lady Knights came back into the game ready and determined to get a win.
As the man-to-man defense continued, the Lady Knights just couldn’t break it until the fourth quarter when sophomore April Quiroz got smart and started to break the press by reading the passes and stealing the ball a few times.
This gave hope to both the Lady Knights as well as their fans. The fought has hard as they could but in the end the Lady Knights did not succeed.
