Soccer teams split Battle of the 'H'

Both varsity soccer teams came out attempting to win the "Battle of the H" against the Horizon Scorpions on Friday, Feb. 10, 2017

Although both teams strived for victory, the boys didn't bring the "H" home.

The teams take on the Canutillo Eagles at Hanks on Friday, Feb. 17, 2017. Games begin at 5:30 for the boys and 7:15 for the girls, respectively.

The Lady Knights (8-5, 5-4 in District 2-5A) had the first game Friday evening. Within the first 10 minutes, sophomore Beth Baumler scored off a penalty. Soon after, junior Abby De la Mora followed with her own goal. Then senior Abby Serena scores a penalty and scored again off an assist from sophomore Geli Torres. Senior Janette Ruvalcaba scored ending the first half 5-0.

In the second half, Serena and Baumler each scored their second goal. Senior Alyssa Olivas scored her first goal from an assist buy senior Isabel Bennigsdorf. Freshmen Itzel Lerma scored and then Bennigsdorf scored the last goal ending the game 10-0.

"I like the fact that we won our first battle of the 'H,'" said girls varsity coach Miguel Carrera. "I also liked that multiple of my players scored."

On the second game the varsity Boys (5-8,3-6 in 2-5A) started with the ball. The Scorpions scored the first half the score being 1-0. Then the second half began with there being a lot tension in between both teams. A member from both teams each received red cards, which means automatic ejection from the game. The battle was still on and the Scorpions scored ending the game 3-0.

"The first half was intense but once we lost our cool second half our game went straight down hill," said senior Eddie Rodriguez, the team's captain. "I feel like our formation should have never changed."
