Boys basketball season ends against Burges

The Hanks varsity boys basketball team battled the Burges Mustangs on Tues. Feb. 21 at Burges. This crucial game also led to one that was very exciting from beginning to end. The Mustangs will now advance as they took the win of the night with a final score of 55-44. The Knights had an overall amazing season with a record of 19-12 overall, and 10-6 in District 2-5A.

The boys opened up the game with determination and focus and only one goal: win to advance. Right away the boys defense attacked and led them with a great advantage on Burges. The varsity boys had many rebounds and steals throughout the entire first half of the game.

With the first half coming to an end, the Mustangs led the Knights with only a four-point lead of 30-26.

Coming back from the half, both teams looked stronger and more focused than ever. With both the Knights and the Mustangs battling it out both had amazing plays coming from both teams, the third came to an end with Burges who once again led Hanks by four points with still a tight score of 40-36.

With only five minutes remaining in the game, the score was 42-40 and Burges had a two-point lead on Hanks. This brought the crowd to their feet to see who would be the Bi-District champ. Burges then took a lead it never gave up.

Senior Chuy Mendoza led the Knights in scoring as he made 18 points in total for the team which consisted most of three point shots. The Knights have much to look forward to next season with Andrew Perkins and Kyle Malone, who were a large part of this 2016-2017 season, are only sophomores. In addition to Perkins and Malone, junior Ernie Montoya will also be a key player to keep the Knights up there for the next season.
