As senior Adrienne Holguin leaves her high-school athletic career behind, the accolades continue to arrive. On Friday, April 13, 2017, athletic director Mike Williams presented Holguin with the 2016-2017 female athlete of the year. Holguin has been a wrestler for Hanks all four years and was made captain her junior and senior year.
To receive this award each athlete must go through an extensive process with the Ysleta Independent School District.
According to Williams, all the districts in El Paso have their high schools submits their top male and female athlete for consideration, which is sent to the committee. These athlete packets are sent to a hall of fame committee, which then they vote to decide which students will be honored.
"It's a process, which next comes The El Paso Hall of Fame Induction where all these students choose will then be recognized," said Williams.
Holguin was humbled by the award.
"This award came as such a surprise to me," said Holguin. "It was special because there are so many others who could've received this award. I'm thankful for not only my coach, but also my team who have all gotten me to where I am now."
Holguin will attend the Hall of Fame ceremony on May 3 at the Sunland Park Race Track in Sunland Park, New Mexico.
"This is the fourth year I go to this event," said Holguin. "This will be different and my team will be right behind me and there to support me."
Many surrounded Holguin as she was presented with the award during class. Administration, and her coach Anthony Carter, stood proudly as she accepted her award.
"I felt like a proud papa," said Carter. "She's part of our family and she represents us so well. Everything she does is just so amazing that words can't begin to express how proud of her I am."
Principal Gloria Spencer has seen many of this year's wrestling meets. She is amazed at the work and dedication Holguin puts into every match.
"Adrienne is an amazing student, athlete and woman," said Spencer. "Her character, perseverance and grit makes her a great role model. She represents what Hanks must give out there. I'm very proud of her and all the rest of the team."
