This past weekend freshman Michael Abeyta took the state title for the 1600 meter run. The mile run is considered one of the hardest and most crucial races, yet Michael made it look like the complete opposite.
Michael participated in Cross Country earlier in the year and also made it to state in his event. He beat his personal record at state by running the 5,000 meter run in 15:34. In November 2016, Michael was named to the 5A-All State team by placing sixth place at the state meet.
As a freshman, this is a large accomplishment for the boys track team. Michael was the only athlete from El Paso to win the state title this year. He ran the 1600 in 4:17 which is now a new school record.
"It was a crazy experience being able to run with the best of the best," said Michael, "It felt amazing to win with such amazing athletes around me."
Michael has much to look forward to in his next 3 upcoming years for not only track, but for cross country as well.
