Murder on the Orient Express: Movie Review

The 2017 remake of the Murder on the Orient Express is definitely a film to remember. The stellar cast and riveting action along with hints of comedy result in a great movie.

Originally a novel published in 1934 by Agatha Christie, Murder on the Orient Express was made into a movie in 1974. With high ratings, it’s no surprise a remake would happen sometime in the 21st century.

The movie takes place in 1933 on a train ride where a passenger is mysteriously murdered. The plot follows a world-famous detective as he searches dauntlessly for clues on the murderer who is revealed in the end in a stunning conclusion.

Director and actor Kenneth Branagh was the perfect choice to play the witty, clever and obsessive-compulsive detective Hercule Poirot. The unique personality of this character was flawlessly portrayed by Branagh which made the overall movie an engrossing one. Towards the end, Herclue begins to be torn apart by the crime in his amazing performance.

Although Kenneth Branagh is the star of the film, the rest of the cast is equally talented. The dozen other passengers are played by famous actors and actresses such as Johnny Depp, Josh Gad and Michelle Pfeiffer.

As they are interrogated one-by-one, the different characters are given a chance to shine and show the kind of person they are. Getting a chance to see the different personalities of each while trying to figure out who the murderer is makes this movie even better. The governess, the doctor, the princess, the maid, the professor, the butler, the count, the assistant, the missionary, the widow, the salesman, are all suspects and throughout the movie we see the reasons any of them could be a murderer. The suspense is enough to keep you on the edge of your seat.

The small train cars and rooms must not have been an easy place to film yet the cinematography was beautiful and brought a lot of action to the small space.

The movie’s ending leaving the audience shocked and makes them wonder how they didn’t see it before.

Overall, a good remake is not an easy thing to accomplish yet this film was executed flawlessly. Not many crime and mystery movies like this one are made anymore so it brought something new to the movies of 2017. The ending also suggest that is may not be the end of mysteries featuring detective Hercule Poirot.
